coup spécial de Squirtle coup spécial de Squirtle

The Pokémon trainer has the ability to switch from one Pokémon to another via down B. Changing the play-style put away, it's very useful to trap an opponent trying to recover on the stage, for example quickly switching between Squirtle to Ivysaur, who gives more options to kill fast at ledge. Moreover, the switch can give you access to Charizard who has 3 jumps, and is way better to recover to the stage! Certainly the best move to exit disadvantage state and to radically change the play-style and the entire game dynamic.

Best moves

  • FORWARD TILT

The best forward tilt among the entire game: it's fast, safe, disjoint and useful for several combos. It is especially used at low and mid%, leading to a true grab around 30%, techchase situations from 80 to 110% and thus to a jablock and a kill. Also, it's a great option to poke a shield because the tail is invincible, just like a sword.

  • AERIALS

All his aerials are excellent: his juggling Up air or his very fast and disjointed Forward air. Thus, it's a very good move offstage and a safe one when used while falling.

  • BACK AIR

The Back air is a multi-hit with a great long-lasting hitbox, being a safe move due to the time Squirtle has to still retreat if the enemy shields the move. Thus, it's a good option in neutral phase and as a multi-hit, it's an interesting move to gimp or just edgeguard.

  • DASHGRAB

We can as well note Squirtle's Dashgrab, followed by a Down Throw, leading to destructive combos. A dashgrab can be performed by running towards the opponent and then grab it. This move, fast and with a huge hitbox can be often used !

    Gang's chief

Squirtle is not an overly offensive character. Even if he has a great frame data on his moves, it doesn't mean that Squirtle is a rushrown Pokémon and insteand of constantly harassing your opponent, a way better strategy will be to bait then to punish your enemy.

in a world we must defend !

Most players will tend to think that every Pokémon works in a certain range of %: we usually start with Squirtle, we continue with Ivysaur and then we end with Charizard. It's not always true and you need to adapt or even be able to start with Ivysaur, depending on the Match-ups. Also, don't forget that you're going to switch your Pokémon in disadvantage, even if it's better to not abuse the switch here. You can also switch to try to get a fast edgeguard kill or for your recovery, so you should better learn to adapt yourself according to the situations.

    Gotta master 'em all !

Don't commit the error of playing only one Pokémon to begin with. Every Pokémon together makes a whole, that is very important to understand in purpose to master the whole potential of the trainer. Learn the killpower of every Pokémon depending on the Match-ups and choose the better Pokémon for every situation, though it's complicated.

    In a nutshell

By playing Pokemon Trainer, pleasure will come from his adaptability, granting you the feeling that every game is really different, because each Pokemon doesn't play the same. It explains why the Trainer is not boring at all, between his creative combos, his great offstage gameplay and his great kill power. It is certainly one of the character that gives his player the greatest freedom ever to express himself while being really pleasant to control. And for the determined ones, the fighter has enough tools at his disposal to always give something to work on and to perfect. To sum up, a good choice to quickly progress and to figure out how to adapt to each player you are facing and to each Match Up.
